\nThere are so many things to see in the country that, depending on the time you have, you will be forced to make choices, unfortunately.
\nThat’s why we decided to break down the itineraries, not so much by areas, but by main interests.
\nSince Costa Rica is above all synonymous with Nature<\/strong>, in this itinerary we have favored a nature route that can satisfy most of the Costa Rican peculiarities, from beaches<\/strong> to tropical forests<\/strong> and, of course, taking into account the fauna<\/strong> and flora<\/strong>.
\nIn any case you can take a look at our Itineraries<\/a> section to find other types of routes.
\nWe thought of structuring the itinerary schematically, as a kind of to-do list and some suggestions on where to eat and stay.
\nTo visit everything you’ll read about in a moment, we recommend that you rent a car<\/a>, because public transportation may lengthen, and not by a little, all the travel time between destinations.

\nJust know that nature has its own times, so you will almost always have to wake up early in the morning!<\/p>\n
Day 1: Arrival in San Jos\u00e9<\/h2>\n

- Arrival: After your flight, arrive in San Jose.
\nWe recommend booking a flight that arrives by mid-day<\/strong> to allow time for acclimatization.<\/li>\n- Accommodation: Hotels in downtown San Jos\u00e9, such as theUrban Green Hotel<\/a>, which offers a central location at reasonable prices<\/strong>.
\nOtherwise we recommend Barrio Escalante<\/strong>, a very quaint neighborhood where you can find the Chillout Hostel<\/a>.<\/li>\n- Free afternoon: Walk in La Sabana Metropolitan Park<\/a>, ideal for stretching your legs after the trip.<\/li>\n
- Dinner: Restaurant“El Novillo Alegre<\/a>” for a taste of Argentinian cuisine<\/strong> (yes, it’s not Costa Rican but it’s a must try).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 2: Po\u00e1s Volcano and Braulio Carrillo National Park<\/h2>\n

- Departure: 6:00 AM for Po\u00e1s Volcano National Park<\/a>.
\nEarly morning is the best time to visit as clouds often cover the crater<\/strong> later in the day.<\/li>\n- Excursion to Po\u00e1s Volcano: 8:00 AM<\/strong> – 10:00 AM<\/strong> you can book your ticket online from the SINAC<\/a> website, you will need to create an account.<\/strong>
\nBring a waterproof jacket or k-way, as the area is known for variable weather.
\nWalk to the crater and view the acid lake<\/strong>, one of the largest in the world.<\/li>\n- Transfer to Braulio Carrillo National Park<\/a>: 11:00 AM.<\/strong>
\nThe park is famous for its biodiversity and primary rainforest<\/strong>.
\nYou can hike the Las Palmas<\/strong> or Ciebo<\/strong> trails, which take about 2-3 hours.
\nAdmission costs $12<\/strong> and can be booked online.<\/a><\/li>\n- Lunch: Packed lunch or at one of the small “sodas” (local restaurants) along the way to Braulio Carrillo.<\/li>\n
- Caution: Bring insect repellent<\/strong> and waterproof hiking shoes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 3: Transfer to Tortuguero<\/h2>\n

- Early departure: 6:00 AM.<\/strong>
\nCombined bus and boat trip to Tortuguero<\/strong>.
\nThe boat trip will allow you to see the first glimpses of wildlife, such as caimans<\/strong> and waterfowl<\/strong>.<\/li>\n- Arrival in Tortuguero: Around noon<\/strong>.
\nAccommodation in an eco-lodge such as Kawe Lodge<\/a>, located between the lagoon and the ocean.<\/li>\n- Afternoon: Explore the village of Tortuguero<\/a> or relax.
\nYou can also visit the Turtle Museum<\/a> to learn more about the species that nest in the area.<\/li>\n- Evening: Evening walk on the beach with a local guide<\/a>. July through October<\/strong> is green turtle season, a unique and fascinating experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 4: Tortuguero National Park<\/h2>\n

- Wake up at dawn: 5:30 AM.<\/strong>
\nEarly morning hours are ideal for spotting wildlife, when animals are most active.<\/li>\n- Canoe tour: 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM.<\/strong> Explore the park’s back channels<\/a>, where you’ll have a better chance of spotting caimans<\/strong>, howler monkeys<\/strong>, sloths<\/strong> and various bird<\/strong> species.<\/li>\n
- Breakfast and Trekking: 9:00 AM.<\/strong>
\nAfter breakfast, take a hike along the park trails.
\nBring plenty of water<\/strong>, a hat<\/strong> and sunscreen<\/strong>.<\/li>\n- Free Afternoon: Relax at the lodge or join a second canoe trip in the afternoon.<\/li>\n
- Caution: The park is a wetland, so prepare raincoats and bags to protect electronic equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 5: Transfer to La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano)<\/h2>\n

\nThe transfer will take you from the Caribbean coast to the inland mountains.
\nIt is a long journey, so bring snacks<\/strong> and water<\/strong> with you.<\/li>\n- Arrival in La Fortuna: Around 2:00 PM<\/strong>.
\nAccommodation in a hotel with a view of the volcano, such as the Arenal Xilopalo<\/a>, a more than decent three-star hotel at an inexpensive price.<\/li>\n- Afternoon: Relax in the natural hot springs of Tabac\u00f3n<\/a> or Baldi.
\nThe warm waters are the perfect way to relax after your trip.<\/li>\n- Dinner: Don Rufino<\/a> Restaurant, offering local g<\/strong> ourmet cuisine<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 6: Arenal Volcano National Park<\/h2>\n

- Departure: 7:00 AM.<\/strong>
\nStart the day with a hearty breakfast, as a day of hiking awaits you.<\/li>\n- Arenal National Park hike: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM<\/strong>.
\nFollow the Las Coladas<\/em> trail, which takes you close to historic lava flows.
\nBring binoculars<\/a> to spot birds such as the toucan<\/strong>.
\nYou can book admission from here<\/a> for about $16.<\/strong><\/li>\n- Visit to La Fortuna waterfall: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM<\/strong>.
\nThe waterfall<\/a> is 70 meters<\/strong> high and falls into a natural pool where you can take a dip<\/strong>.
\nThere are about 500 steps down to the waterfall, so be prepared for a strenuous climb.<\/li>\n- Afternoon: Return to the lodge to rest.
\nYou can also take a short kayak ride on Lake Arenal<\/a>.<\/li>\n- Tip: The park is rich in wildlife<\/strong>, so keep a quiet profile to increase your chances of spotting animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 7: Transfer to Monteverde<\/h2>\n

\nAccommodation in a house<\/a>, the same one we rented, in close contact with friendly coati<\/strong>.<\/li>\n- Afternoon: Visit the orchid<\/strong> garden<\/strong> and hummingbird garden<\/strong>, where you can see different species of rare plants and birds.
\nThere is a hummingbird caf\u00e9<\/a> right in front of the entrance to the reserve, anyway take a look at the guidebook we wrote about the Monteverde Biological Reserve<\/a><\/li>\n- Night walk: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM<\/strong>.
\nA unique experience to observe nocturnal animals<\/a>, such as kinkajou<\/strong>, tarantulas<\/strong> and frogs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nDay 8: Monteverde Nebular Forest Reserve<\/h2>\n

- Suspension bridge tours: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM<\/strong>. Admire the forest from above, walking through the treetops<\/a>.<\/li>\n
- Zip-line or canopy tour: 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM<\/strong>. If you like adventures, this is a must to experience the thrill of flying over the forest<\/a>.<\/li>\n
- Warning: The cloud forest is wet and cold<\/strong>, so bring layered clothing and a waterproof jacket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 9: Transfer to Manuel Antonio<\/h2>\n

- Departure: 7:00 AM.<\/strong> Travel about 4-5 hours<\/strong> to the Pacific coast.<\/li>\n
- Arrival in Manuel Antonio: Around 12:00 PM.<\/strong> We advise you not to stay near the main road because it is noisy, Glamping Tomaselli<\/a> is a convenient choice in a quiet area<\/li>\n
- Afternoon: Relax on the beach at Playa Espadilla<\/strong> or explore the village<\/a>.<\/li>\n
- Tip: Pay attention to tides and strong currents along some of the beaches in the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day 10: Manuel Antonio National Park<\/h2>\n

- Snorkeling or kayaking: 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM<\/strong>. Rent snorkeling equipment or a kayak to explore hidden bays. The clear waters are perfect for seeing colorful fish and, if you’re lucky, sea turtles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
- Return to San Jose: Depart early afternoon to return to San Jose.<\/strong> The trip takes about 3 hours<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
- Dinner and last night: Last night in San Jose<\/strong>, perhaps with dinner at the“Cafe Rojo<\/a>” restaurant known for its fine and innovative cuisine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
